Budanilkantha

February 03, 2011

Budhanilkantha is about 8km northeast of Kathmandu at the base of Sivapuri hill. In the village of Budhanilkantha lies a 5 meter tall sleeping Vishnu (Jalasayana) in the middle of a small pond. The sculpture from the 5th century represents Vishnu's sleeping in the cosmic ocean while resting on Ananta Sesa the thousand headed snake. The Deity is over 1,000 years old. Lord Vishnu is about 5m (17 ft) long and is lying in a 13m (43 ft) long tank, as if floating, with His legs crossed. Budhanilkantha literally means “old blue-throat.”

This photo was taken ages and ages ago around the year 2002, shooted by my VGA vivitar camera ...But the quality is good enough.
